I just installed BOINC Manager and started a task. I just want to make sure I can minimize it and it will still function in the background? Or do I need to keep it as the active app?

Yes, it runs minimized generally.

Yes it will run in background and you can set to run at like 25% max use cpu if your a heavy computer user.
If working like me in software dev or app dev or gaming it up you can set in your compute preferences located under options in advanced view mode to only run when your not hammering cpu like myself.
To get to advanced view at the top of start up window to view advanced.
