I want to make sure that I'm equally supporting many projects, so will I get assigned whenever, or only when I hit "Synchronize"?

If this is like other account managers then every once in a while, maybe once or twice a day, your BOINC client will phone home and sync with your settings. However, I'm not positive on this.

After some experimentation, every 12 hours your BOINC clients will automatically sync to Science United. So, no you do not
