Team Descriptions not updating.

Description

I have asked around a few places and finally got directed here. Our team is a Boinc Wide team. A few years old. We have recently been going through the projects updating and changing or Team Descriptions. We get them changed and look fine, but come back a few hours later (sometimes a day later) and they revert back to the previous description.

We then was told to update it here, http://boinc.berkeley.edu/teams/ Had the team founder go there and do the update. Still doesn't seem to change a thing.

I have noticed though not all projects have this problem. All the projects that have updated there BOINC versions to recent ones do. It seems to be projects that have updated to version that have Team Admin features and forward, from what I can tell. I might be wrong. I just know we are having a hard time getting our stuff changed in most places.

If you have a BOINC-wide team, its description (as you enter it on the BOINC-wide teams site) is propagated to all BOINC projects, and will overwrite any changes you make at individual projects. This propagation happens once per day, so that's why your local changes get overwritten after a few hours.

Currently your team description is the same on SETI@home as it is on the BOINC-wide site. So as far as I can tell, things are working correctly.

If a project comes from a BOINC-Wide team (store that fact in a boolean in the DB), it shouldn't let you change the description from the project pages.

Thats one of the problems. We HAVE changed it at the Boinc-wide area also. And it is reverting also. That is why they are wrong at Seti and Boinc Wide. But some like Burp and older Boinc software its fine. I will have founder change the settings ONCE again through the Boinc-Wide and see what happens.

Team founder couldn't seem to post this here, so copy/paste.

HI folks. I am the team founder of Calm Chaos. This is the problem we are having....

I have gone to the BOINC Wide page and edited our team description. The problem is that it keeps reverting to the OLD description, which contains a link to a web address that we no longer use. We are trying to update the description ( in HTML format ) including the new link.

What is happening is that after a few hours, up to a day, the description reverts back to the old version with the incorrect link. This is still happening AFTER I have gone to the BOINC Wide system to make the changes.

The confusing part about it is that it only started happening relatively recently.

I see that this " ticket " has been closed, but we are still having the problem and the answers provided here so far have been no help. I would appreciate it if you could re open it so that we can try to get to the bottom of the issue. It may be a BOINC version issue, or it may be something completely unrelated. Either way, the BOINC wide system isn't working for us because it's not stopping the description from reverting to the older version and sending people to a dead web address.

Any help would be appreciated.

Replying to Buga1: I will see if I can duplicate. Last time I changed it October 1st, it propagated properly to projects that update from BWT. I changed my description in BWT and on SETI. I will see if any update or revert to old description. The changed descriptions I added a time stamp with today and times in the 8am range. I can use that to determine if they update, do not update or revert to an old description. Keith

Replying to davea: I can verify something is not working now. I have observed exact same situation as reported by other poster. What I did was add a line of text as a time stamp to my team on BWT. "Edit Test: Saturday 10-18-2008 8:04am. K-K was here.". Then I added a line on SETI with the time of 8:20am, and a line on PS3GRID with the time of 8:36am. I checked several times during the day and no change at those 3 sites or at Malaria where I did not change the description. Around 7PM I checked PS3GRID and the time stamp line was gone, it was not replaced by the one at BWT, hence the description reverted to what I had before I edited it. At this time I checked SETI at the time stamp I added was there. I checked again around 7:30 PM and suddenly this time stamp was gone, It was not replaced by the one at BWT, hence the description at SETI also revered to what I ahd before editing. I checked BWT and the line I added is still there. Instead of the description propagating from BWT the descriptions are reverting on each project to what they were before editing. Now as far as I know, when I previously updated my BWT description just before October 1st, it properly propagated to projects then as I replaced September events with October events, which clearly show now on projects. I checked about 10-12 other projects, none of them that use BWT import as of yet show signs of updating with the line I added at BWT.

Well I least I know Im not losing my mind know. Has been a problem for a little while. That was before we started to look at the BWT area though. Never came to mind in September to use the BWT.

Is this gonna get looked at again and fixed? As our team leader said, we will start having bad links in our Description soon.

After waiting another 24 hours, both SETI, PS3GRID (and others) updated to using the description as entered on BWT. If you wait long enough it updates. I think if you update only your BWT description once and wait it will be fine. Make sure also the team founder uses the same name and email address on BWT and on the projects. See the BWT intro page. Not all projects use BWT update so this will only happen on those that do, the others you will have to update manually. Contact them on their forum and encourage them to active this feature.

David, there is still a problem on projects where the description reverts to a previous description after editing and before the BWT update occurs (?) It only happens once as far as I can tell.

That might be if the project imports from BWT before BWT exports from its database. It's importing from a stale file.

Maybe there shouldn't even be a periodic "export". When a project imports from BWT, it should read directly from BWT's database instead of a periodically-generated static file.

Replying to Nicolas:

When a project imports from BWT, it should read directly from BWT's database instead of a periodically-generated static file.

Probably a sort of caching, if hundreds of projects should use the data.

But still, paraphrased from the previous note:

If a project is (periodically) importing team descriptions from BWT, it should not let you change the description on local team pages, or at least let the user know the fact (one line would be enough to save him a lot of frustration).
