Else go BOINC Manager->Advanced->Options, check Enable Manager exit dialog?, then when you exit the Manager you get the choice to stop running the science applications as well (this also turns off the service as there's nothing to do) and an option to remember this for the next time.

I am not talking about boinc, I am talking about boincmgr. There is no way to shut it down except killing it with the task manager. Even if it continues to run, it should not be using effective one core of a quad core cpu.
- Closing window with File/Close? Windows works: Boincmgr continues to run @ 0% CPU.
- Closing with File/Exit? leaves boincmgr running with 25% (1 core of a quad) CPU usage.

"task remains remains running, using 25% of the CPU." sounded like you were talking about the science app.
Can anyone else reproduce this problem?

Just upgraded to 6.6. Problem still exists. Windows XP Pro X64, installed as service with program in C:
Program Files\Boinc, Data in H:\Boinc.
Close Window ok: boincmgr goes to tray, cpu to 0%. Exit fault: boinc does not go to tray, but task remains running using 25% cpu.

Sorry if I was not clear, on Boinc Manager Exit, all my science tasks remain running (as they should when running as a service), but the boincmgr task also continues to run @ 25% cpu usage.

Just checked everything after a reboot. All log file clean except for the msg "6:35:00 PM: Error: can't open file 'C:\Program Files\Boinc
RebootPending?.txt' (error 2: the system cannot find the file specified.)" in the stdoutgui.txt file (note- file does not exist). No other errors. Same behavior, had to kill boincmgr with the Windows Task Manager. As a side note, what is BoincTray? and why is it always running? Note 2: Why are boincmgr and boinctray setup to start in a service installation? I rarely if ever use the Boinc Manager.

Milestone: | Undetermined → 6.10 |
Setting the milestone to 6.10.
the new exit dialog was put in at the request of WCG back when the default install scenario was still Protected Mode install. We have reverted back to the single user install as the default so that GPU computing would be possible out of the box.
This whole scenario needs to be rethought out.

I believe this issue is now resolved in the latest 6.12 release.
That's what it's supposed to do. Closing the manager doesn't stop BOINC service, just like turning off your screen doesn't shutdown your computer.
