As described here https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=249358 originally I get a lot of lines like these :

tfoerste@n22 ~ $ boinc_gui

21:42:21: Error: Can't load image from file 'projects/einstein.phys.uwm.edu/slideshow_einstein_S5R4_00': file does not exist.
21:42:21: Error: Can't load image from file 'projects/einstein.phys.uwm.edu/slideshow_einstein_S5R4_01': file does not exist.
21:42:21: Error: Can't load image from file 'projects/einstein.phys.uwm.edu/slideshow_einstein_S5R4_02': file does not exist.
21:42:21: Error: Can't load image from file 'projects/einstein.phys.uwm.edu/slideshow_einstein_S5R4_03': file does not exist.

under linux at the command line after I started the client.

It's the manager which causes those messages.

Do I have to reinstall my currently installed version (6.4.5) ?

Reinstalling can't fix the problem. If 6.4.5 still has the problem, then you need a newer version.
