#751 new Defect
Boinctray.exe is started from registry, not by BOINC.

Description
At this moment boinctray.exe is started from the registry (at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion?\Explorer\Run for you who want to go look it up).
This means that when you install a new version of BOINC, without rebooting or logging off, that boinctray.exe does not restart when the new BOINC starts. I would think that boinctray.exe needs to start when the client starts, not by logging off/back on.
I saw this behaviour first time testing BOINC 6.3.14, but it may have been doing this for a while already.

So then what happens when you shut down the service (for maintenance) and restart it afterwards? Then you got the same trouble that boinctray.exe doesn't run. Unless you like to log off and back on... ;-)

OK, I understand that boinctray keeps on running when you shut down BOINC (whether it's a service or not). Isn't that a bug in itself?
But what if you shut down BOINC and got rid of boinctray for maintenance. Upon restarting BOINC, boinctray doesn't start (at this time).

Think of it as if boinctray.exe would be started from Win Start/All? Programs/Startup?. This or that way, it's launched just once upon login.
Or there would have to be some other application monitoring BOINC service, which would start boinctray.exe upon starting the client. But the same would happen if you'd get rid of this application...

Setup bugs are being punted to a future release. This work item should be completed with the new open source installer.

Please consider giving this bug some priority -- it really needs to be fixed.
(Ticket #1142 was another user burned by this bug.)
The installer should start it.
