#726 closed Enhancement (wontfix)

Include boinccmd in GUI client

Reported by: dgoldsmith Owned by: charlief
Priority: Trivial Milestone: Undetermined
Component: Client - Build Version:
Keywords: Cc: mac

Description

It would be helpful to include the boinccmd binary in the GUI client. For Mac OS X, it would live in BOINCManager.app/Contents/Resources/, the same place as the boinc binary.

This would ensure that it was always up to date, and in the same directory as boinc, and with the right ownership/permissions/etc.

Reason: sometimes I want to remotely control BOINCManager, but I can't use the GUI mechanism due to a firewall. I can get into the machine via ssh. It would be nice to be able to suspend/resume, etc. via ssh, and that requires boinccmd.

An alternative would be to merge boinc and boinccmd.

Very few Mac GUI users would even know what to do with boinccmd, and many would find it confusing. The current version of boinccmd is always available as a separate download (as part of the Unix command-line version) from the same web page as the GUI installer. For the handful of users who want both, it takes only a few seconds to do the second download. For everyone else, including boinccmd in the GUI installer would be a waste of bandwidth.

Replying to charlief:

How would anyone find it confusing? It wouldn't show up in any visual list. If they don't know what it is and how to use it (from Terminal), they'll never even notice it exists.

Two advanced features that can only be used from boinccmd: set a project to auto-detach when all work is completed, and tweak debts.

For the handful of users who want both, it takes only a few seconds to do the second download. For everyone else, including boinccmd in the GUI installer would be a waste of bandwidth.

Waste of bandwidth? Seriously, how big is it?

I'll vote for this too. I want to control Boinc from Marco Polo (an app that figures out where you are and whether you have power).
