Description

Posted by: Date: 4:50 AM 06-02-2006 It might be attractive to allow the Select Computer... dialog on Boinc Manager to specify the port number as well as the domain name of a remote boinc daemon. This would help facilitate ssh tunneling.

It could be easily achieved by simply allowing specification like "domain:port" eg localhost:31416. The programming required to handle this looks like it would be minimal.

Such functionality is available for windows users via BoincView?, but no similar facility is available natively on other platforms, to my knowledge.

Posted by: Date: 4:53 AM 06-02-2006 Just a thought - it would help backwards compatibility with the previous boinc versions which used a different port no.

Glad I'm not alone in this - I think I already made this request in item 56! Once tunnels have been set up with putty or ssh, the client can manage and view stats on all remote machines through localhost:nnnnn (which at a later time will require a method of managing a list of the remote machines!)

Yes, BoincView? is excellent for remote machine management over vanilla or existing ssh tunnels, but is limited to Windows. Those using the linux client are stuck with localhost:31416 and remote vanilla connections hardcoded to 31416.

I think this is an oversight that is trivial to correct and long overdue. Andy
