#479 closed Defect (fixed)

Give team founders and admins information about wanted mail contact

Reported by: Saenger Owned by: davea
Priority: Major Milestone: Undetermined
Component: Web - Project Version:
Keywords: teams Cc:

Description

In the projects preferences a user can select whether s/he wants to recieve newsletters or not. I would assume that new participants expect not to recieve any project related mail if they put this option to "No", including mail from the teams.

This information is not given to the founders in the team member email list, so they have no possibility to know whether the user will consider a mail by them as spamming or not.

The information about this preference should be included in the team member email list, especially as the accessibility of this list has just been expanded to the new created team admins without prior consent of the users.

I don't think that it's necessary to leave their email out of the list at all, they are told with entering that the founder will have access and can decide agains joining at that point, but the marker should be proliferated.

World Community Grid goes further - founders ("captains") do not have access to member emails. The ability for captains to contact members and members to contact captains is opt-in.

This is a privacy issue, so it should be down to individual projects. However, BOINC could make it easier to use an opt-in strategy instead of the current email sharing strategy.

World Community Grid has imho the gold standard for the handling of private data in BOINC.

It's policy is mentioned in this post in the BOINC forum: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=1862&nowrap=true#11554

It should be implemented in BOINC as the standard as well.

I disagree with this policy!

Because of the policy on World community Grid, it is impossible to contact anyone on the project. This will be one of the deciding factors that will limit the ability of this project to grow! I raised this issue in Geneva with some of the WCG people. I have about 60 members on our WCG team and i can only contact 5 of them.

If someone chooses to join a team, nobody is forcing them to do it!. People don't join teams because they want to be on their own, they do it because they want to be part of a group. BOINC works very well exactly as it is now. The only person complaining about this problem is Saenger.

Saenger post some links to messages you have found that people other than yourself are complaining about "Spam Email" from their team!

I run www.boincteams.com with over 70 team founders and activists and nobody is complaining about this stuff.

Leave things alone that work well! BOINC will work better for it!
