BOINC can't figure out how to connect to the Internet

Hi

I've installed BOINC on my Windoze eXtra Pathetic machine at work, but it won't get past the first step in communication. I've tried to choose a project, but BOINC won't communicate with it, then I get an error saying that I don't have an internet connection, which is news to me sitting on a T1 line which works fine for every other TCP/IP app I run. Now, web connections at my university go via a proxy config script, and there's no option to enter that into the BOINC prefs. I tried entering the address of the university proxy server but nothing happened. Either I'm missing something obvious in the BOINC prefs or BOINC tries to use a port which our sysadmins have blocked. Error report below. And I think I've RTFM, though TFM is quite large and I do have work to do ;-|

So, if someone here can point me towards a solution then I'll happily use all my spare cycles for as many projects as I can get my mitts on, as I have been doing up to now for a project that's finally closed down. If not, then forget it - I've spent nearly two hours installing/uninstalling software from various grid projects without success.

Sounds like a proxy server problem. Boinc has big problems communicating through particular types of proxy servers. You could try installing an older version of Boinc to see if that can get through (perhaps an early 5.4, or 5.2), but that's not a guaranteed fix.

<shrug> Ok, I'll give it a miss - I remember having proxy probs with other apps (such as site mirrorers) and spending hours fiddling about, and they were important. Never mind, I'm sure I'll find a non-BOINC grid project I can join.
