Description
I converted a rather big VMWare file (> 20GB) to qcow2 format from/to an external USB drive (which btw was the boot drive for the Linux system too).
Therefore the whole system was rather slow / unresponsive . Nevertheless all things worked fine except boinc - where all tasks were aborted with a "computation error" :-(

And what furthermore comes into my mind - what about a soft-mounted NFS drive, where the remote system is just rebooted ?

This behaviour is triggered by the heartbeat mechanism of the client/science app. A more robust mechanism was just recently build into the client and the library but it still needs some time because projects need to rebuild there science apps with latest code and users have to use the latest client version.
I will close this bug now. Please reopen if this happens with more recent versions of the client.
I can reliable produce such errors, when I boot a stable Gentoo from an external USB drive. IMHO boinc just should be more relaxed to slow disks responses.
