1= Help publicize BOINC, BOINC-based projects, and volunteer computing =
     2
3Publicizing BOINC and BOINC-based projects in mass media
4will increase the number of BOINC volunteers,
5the amount of computing power available to BOINC-based projects,
6and the amount of science they get done.
7There are various media that could publicize BOINC.
8For now we are concentrating on magazines related to computing and/or science.
     9
10You can help this publicity effort by communicating
11(by mail, email, or phone) with magazines.

    414
5 We should encourage all magazines related to computing and science to publicize BOINC.
6 There are several ways to approach a magazine:
    7
8  * Write a letter to their "Letters to the Editor" department describing BOINC.
9  * Write a letter encouraging them to run a story on BOINC.
10  * Write a letter encouraging them to include BOINC on any CD/DVD that they include with their magazine.
11  * Write a letter encouraging them to "cross-promote" with BOINC.  Possibilities include having them develop a "private label" version of the BOINC client with their logo, creating teams on all the BOINC projects, and so on.
12  * If they have Web-based forums, join them and post about BOINC in the appropriate forum.
    13
14 With any of these, stress the points:
    15
16  * It's not just SETI and prime numbers any more; the science projects include everything medical research to studying global warming.
15Please scan the following list of magazines,
16and select only magazines in your country.
17Add any magazines that are not already listed.
18Wikipedia has a good [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_magazines list of computer magazines].
19You can find more info about many of these magazines there.
     20
     21Consider sending each magazine either:
     22
23 * a letter to their "Letters to the Editor" department describing BOINC.
24 * a letter to their editor, encouraging him/hr to run a story on BOINC, or to include BOINC on any CD/DVD that they include with their magazine, or to "cross-promote" with BOINC.  Possible forms of cross-promotion include having them develop a "private label" version of the BOINC client with their logo, creating teams on all the BOINC projects, and so on. Please have the magazines contact [ProjectPeople David Anderson], and/or the leaders of BOINC-based projects, for info.
     25
26If the magazine has Web-based forums, join them and post about BOINC in the appropriate forum.
     27
28'''If you contact a magazine, please add a note to this web page
29(below the magazine's entry in the list below),
30saying what you did and the date.
31This will reduce duplication of effort.'''
     32
33Consider including the following points in your letter or forum posting:
     34
35 * Volunteer computing is not just SETI and prime numbers any more; the science projects include everything from medical research to climate change.
1736 * With BOINC, you're not locked in to one project.  You can run as many as you want, and change whenever you want.  You see your credit totals all in one place.
1837 * BOINC gives you extensive control over when and how your computer is used, including CPU throttling and day-of-week preferences.
1938 * BOINC is open source, and many of the projects' applications are too.  It's possible (and encouraged) for volunteers to optimize applications for specific architectures.
    2039
21 If you want to encourage the magazine to support a specific team, that's fine.
22 If you contact a magazine, please add a note to the web page
23 so that there's not too much duplication of effort.
24 Please have the magazines contact [ProjectPeople David Anderson] for general info.
