#673 romw Ageless fixed BOINC 6.2.4 won't install on fresh install of Windows 2000 SP4
Description

I've just tried installing 6.2.4 on another system of mine that runs Windows 2000 SP4. Prior to trying to install it I updated it on all MS updates as with the 5.10.45 that I tried, I got error 1053 all the time (something to do with a missing update to .Net 1.1).

I cannot install it as a service. Whenever I try, I get stalled at error 1920: no permissions. No matter how many reboots I do. It's a clean install, no prior BOINC on that system, as I delete all possible left-over 5.10.45 traces before going to 6.2.4

It only ran briefly after the install, but it kept telling me that I had to ask my administrator to add me to the group of people allowed to run BOINC. Which is weird as there's only one account on that whole system and that is the administrator. I didn't add any other accounts when I made it as it's primarily serving our TV.

So I did the reboot, to make sure Windows knew about the new accounts. Since that time I'm stuck at error 1920. Trying a repair install also stops at error 1920 when the service is started. I tried with and without allowing all users to control BOINC, both stop me with the same error as soon as the service is started.

Cleaned out the registry, did a reboot. Installed BOINC 6.2.4 for the one user only, with logging. It installed but told me I had no rights to control BOINC Manager. After 30 seconds the BOINC service stopped running and would no longer restart.

Description:
The BOINC service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

So I rebooted and then got stonewalled at error 1053 again. I'm wondering if http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886695 has to do with it, even though I am using Windows 2000. (And otherwise it's something for the elusive DLL initialization error that plagues BOINC still. It IS that same error message!)

Next I uninstalled BOINC, cleaned out the registry again, did a reboot and went to install again. This time with other users allowing control of BM. I logged the install again... but now the service refuses to start.

First I got an error 1923, when I ignored that one I ended at 1920.

#681 davea Didactylos fixed max_cpus preference ignored.
Description

When max_cpus was replaced with max_ncpus_pct, the old setting was removed from the parser. This is an error; the old setting still exists in many preference sets, and is still set by some projects.

This will have the effect that BOINC 6 will run on all cores/cpus after upgrading. Because this is such a critical setting, I have made this ticket a blocker.

max_cpus should still be used any time when max_ncpus_pct is not present.

#691 davea Ageless fixed Message from server: Incomplete request received
Description

This bug has been around since about 2005, people come on forums and report that their client, which was working perfectly for months, all of a sudden only returns this error. They can't upload, download or report work anymore.

Most of the times we try to help in forums, but since none of us knows what is causing it, eventually the person is left behind without help. As far as I know, the only real fix is to reformat, reinstall the OS and reinstall BOINC clean. Which isn't good enough, imho.

So I am inputting it into Trac, as a blocker.

It would be nice to have a final answer to this problem.
