Recently, the Windows BOINC client stopped being able to communicate with some projects and with Science United. This is because of an expired entry in a file called the "certificate authority bundle".

To fix this problem, download a new version of the file, then move it to the

C:/Program Files/BOINC

directory.

This is a temporary fix. We hope to release a new version of the client that won't have this problem in the future.

We at Science United hope that everyone is doing OK in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and all its effects.

One of the science projects in Science United - Rosetta@home - is doing research involving coronavirus proteins; details are here. We have increased the allotment of Rosetta@home so that it will get most of the CPU power of Science United. Other projects may launch coronavirus-related research soon. We hope that Science United can help fight the pandemic. Thanks for participating, and stay well.

World Community Grid (WCG) is a BOINC project that supports a range of humanitarian research. WCG has its own way of registering; accounts can be created only on the web, not via server-to-server communication. Until recently this prevented it from being included in Science United.

We fixed this by having all Science United computing use a single WCG account. We made the same change for Einstein@home, which recently switched to web-only account creation. We may do the same for all projects; there's no real reason to use different project accounts for different SU users.

This doesn't impact SU users, except that instead of user names like "Science United user 3ac9082d" you'll just see "Science United".

We changed things so that when Science United creates an account on a BOINC project, it uses a random (anonymous) name, password, and email address, rather than using the info from your Science United account.

We did this in part to prepare for EU-GDPR (new rules involving data privacy) but it turns out to simplify SU (no need to deal with password mismatches). It also increases security because your email address and hashed SU password are no longer sent to projects.
